New for 2024

The CYM BA (Hons) in Practical Theology with Foundation Year allows students to develop your ministry and work with children, young people, families and their communities in a practical context.

You will grow in confidence, faith and practical skills as part of a worshipping community throughout your studies.

The addition of a foundation year to our BA (Hons) in Practical Theology opens doors to those not yet ready to enter Year 1 of our standard degree. If offers a grounding in principles of academic study in theology and the wider social sciences. This could make our Theology degree accessible to those who do not have sufficient entry qualifications, or who would like additional time to return to study after a long break.

What will I study?

There are three themes that you will study across the year in six modules: Foundations in practical theology; Education and society; and Being human in a digital world. Each of these gives you a grounding in working with people in the context of Christian mission and ministry.

The student is at the heart of the learning experience as you will be supported in your learning from day one through to completion of the degree. Students will attend a mix of lectures, seminars and tutor groups, either in Nottingham for the Campus-based option or via Zoom and Teams for a student online. Further activities will help you learn and grow in your own time such as reading tasks, watching pre-recorded lectures and other web-based activities. In addition students will receive one to one support from CYM tutors to help them grow and achieve.

Placements and Ministry Practice

While there is no formal placement element to the course, it is hoped that most students will engage in volunteering in a local church or community setting to help bring their learning to life and prepare them for the next step in their ministry and BA (Hons) studies.

Students will usually progress to Year 1 of the BA in the mode they begin, i.e. if you begin the online Foundation Year, it is anticipated you will complete all four years of the degree online, and vice versa.

Funding for a Foundation Year

Student Finance England provide full funding for Foundation Year courses, as for the rest of your degree, to cover the course fees. It should be noted that while loans for fees are available for online and campus based study, Maintenance Loans are only available for campus based degrees. Applicants from other regions should check their local student finance body for details.

The Foundation year leads into our BA in Practical Theology with specialist pathways. Find out more about the rest of your degree programme here.
